Siracusa: harbor: refugee boat
Ship with patina. Or to put it bluntly, rusting bucket of bolts. But interesting nonetheless. Peeling, bubbling, faded paint and rust make great visuals.
Siracusa: city
Intriguing pie shaped building with curved balconies that follow the angles of the alley ways. Like a miniature of New York's Flatiron building. Visually interesting, but very bad feng shui.

Siracusa: city
Smack dab in the middle of the city. Bam! A bunch of ruins. |

Siracusa: temple of athena (aka church of st lucia)
Former Greek temple, converted and modified into a church. They've been practicing adaptive reuse and urban renewal many centuries before it became popularized by greedy modern day real estate developers. Now, this would totally become a wickedly awesome loft if they ever decide to convert it to residential use. (Or a really great Hot Dog on a Stick stand.) |

Siracusa: restaurant tucked away in an alley
Grilled calamari. Perfectly done. Drool... |
|
March 24 12:53pm |
Siracusa: gelato store
Apparently something very funny that the rest of us are not privy to. Perhaps photos of the restaurant patio where we dined alfresco, surrounded by a disturbing number of naked statues- all with their penises (peni?) pointed towards us. |
|
Siracusa: city
Shady Sicilian mafia discussions. I'm almost certain ATA did not pay any protection money for the tour. Which one of us is next to get whacked? |

Siracusa: harbor
What are the chances that two people lost their contact lenses at the same time and place? |

Siracusa: harbor
Historically one of Sicily's major sources of power and trade. Yes, I have done some of the homework reading. In high school, I mastered the art of actually paying attention while putting on the appearance of detached nonchalance. Great to know I've still got it.
Siracusa: quarry of dionysius |

Siracusa: greek theater
The entertainment industry of the day. And it will still last longer than our televisions. I bet back then, nobody had to deal with transitioning to digital tv and giving back valuable wireless spectrum. |

Siracusa: greek theater
We've been sitting here for 2500 years, and the play hasn't started. When is it going to start? We each paid 2 tetradrachmas for tickets and won't be satisfied until we see a play. We're going to sit here another 2500 years if that's what it takes to get our 2 tetradrachmas worth.
Siracusa: ear of dionysius
Acoustically confusing cave. A bit like talking to my mother on the phone. |
|
Siracusa: amphitheater
Pictures in guidebooks normally show this as rocky and barren. However, when we were there, the fields were especially verdant. Even more so since I enhanced the photo to reflect what I saw in my head instead of what my eyes actually took in. |

March 24 5:24pm |
Near Taormina: hairpin turns
Look Ma. No hands! |
|
March 24 5:51pm |
Taormina: piazza of evil dog with glowing blue eyes
You wouldn't have guessed, but the dog is actually controlling the person with hypnotic mind power. The dog is the mastermind behind this scheme to separate unsuspecting tourists from their precious 50cent euro bathroom coins. |
|
March 24 9:46pm |
Giardini Naxos: temple of dionysus circa 2005
This temple was poorly constructed in 2005 by a team of inebriated amateurs. Despite it's poor workmanship, this temple is noted for it's unusual use of glass instead of limestone and the unconventional even number of columns at the entrance. |
