Sorrento: grand hotel la pace

Nancy abandoning us to join the other German tour group. Impromptu German lessons await.
Olea europaea L.
Family Oleaceae
Ed's Pine Cone

Well, not exactly a pine cone. From an Italian cypress tree, similar, but without narrow needles.

Pietramelara

I'm certain the entire town thought we were really really lost.

Pietramelara: village

Gail's charming storybook village with old buildings nestled on the hill.

Pietramelara: village

Sight lines at the top of the village make defense easy. Though, these days, one is more likely to defend against a wandering buffalo than any invaders.

A-maze-ing. Little pathways and passages through town.

Pietramelara: village

I'm familiar with built-in shelves and cabinets, but built in doormats! Very cool. But where do you hide the key?

Delicious rustic food. The wait staff could use some more Italian lessons.

Rome: crayola trains

I like the colors.

Rome: over the rainbow

Do leprechauns travel to Italy? Why yes, there is a pot of gold in the Vatican. A very very very large pot of gold.
Rome: papal apartment

Top floor, second window from the right. I'm imagining that Pope John Paul is secretly an urban hipster inside. It may not look it from the outside, but his bedroom has polished concrete floors, modern potato chip molded plywood chairs, a low platform bed, and a single white calla lily in a milk glass vase.

Serious copyright infringement issues here. I must report this to Disney Brand Management.

Something kind of scary about these puppets. I understand these are traditional and children have been entertained for ages, but they are kind of scary in an evil clown kind of way. Clowns. Shudder...

Rome: sunset

Beautiful late afternoon golden light. It really picks out the hues of the Italian buildings.

Pinus pinea

Umbrella Pine

The bark of it's French cousin is used to make the extract pyconogenol- an anti-oxidant.

Cupressus sempervirens
Family Cupressaceae

Italian Cypress

This is one of the chubbier varieties- must be due to all that good Italian food.
